Based in Silver Spring, MD

The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) in Silver Spring, MD has an immediate opening for a Health & Safety Coordinator .

The ATU International Health & Safety Department provides support and training to ATU locals across the United States and Canada. This department provides training modules, regulatory information, guidance for safety committees, and direct support to all members of the ATU International with regards to workplace health and safety. The Health & Safety Coordinator will report to the Health & Safety Director and perform work to support the values and vision of ATU International to contribute to a safe and inclusive workplace environment.

The ATU is the largest union representing transit and allied workers in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1892, the ATU is comprised of more than 200,000 members and our mission is to fight for the interest of its hard-working members and promote mass transit. The ATU is led by its International President, and its leadership also include its International Secretary Treasurer and International Executive Vice President as well as the ATU General Executive Board, which is comprised of 18 International Vice-Presidents.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collect and analyze survey data for Health & Safety Department records.
  • Compile survey data and provide comprehensive reports and data analysis.
  • Develop hazard specific survey tools for local unions to use in issue campaigns and support safety committee recommendations and survey data analysis.
  • Design and maintain a dedicated Health and Safety resource library on the ATU Website.
  • Support development of online training videos, modules, and ATU Health and Safety social media content.
  • Collect and organize Agency Safety Plans in a database that can be accessed by ATU staff working on Health & Safety related projects. Review collected Agency Safety Plans from ATU Local Unions to ensure IIJA and PTASP Rule compliance.
  • Collect information from Local Unions regarding non-compliant transit agencies.
  • Analyze safety security data reported to the NTD by agencies that employ ATU members.
  • Analyze trends and write reports regarding NTD data and assist local unions in compiling assault statistics reported to the NTD.
  • Coordinate the yearly survey of ATU Local Unions to gather information about safety committee status, Agency Safety Plan updates, Risk Reduction Programs, and other relevant safety information to support enforcement efforts with FTA/DOT.
  • Develop materials to promote projects within ATU.
  • Create and publish a monthly newsletter with health and safety updates, upcoming training and education sessions, and resources.
  • Survey development and distribution.
  • Maintain records and information including filing of hard and soft copy documentation, create and update contact lists for all Local Union safety committee representatives.
  • Create drafts of internal reports for the Bus Design Innovation Project (BDIP) project.
  • Monitor and respond to general correspondence and inquiries from members via phone and email to connect them with the appropriate contact/s.
  • Provide support for meetings, committees, training sessions, conferences, and events.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent certification in office administration, occupational safety and health, public health or other related discipline.
  • Minimum 2 years of administrative or safety experience.
  • Prior experience with unions, safety and health committees, community organizations or other labor-allied organizations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Interest in workplace safety and worker rights;
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to keep meeting minutes, manage agendas, and draft official reports;
  • Able to manage multiple projects, set priorities, and meet deadlines;
  • Experience with data collection, management, and analysis;
  • Advanced level of MS Office programs (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS SharePoint, MS Outlook);
  • Experience with web-based research and reading and writing research reports.
  • Critical reading skills and ability analyze and summarize complex reports, academic research, legislative language, or provisions of collective bargaining agreements.

Location:
This position is based out of the ATU’s headquarters office at 10000 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland. There is an option for hybrid in-person/remote work.

Compensation:
Salary will range from $75,000 to $80,000 depending on experience. ATU provides medical, dental, vision and life insurance with no employee premiums; a defined-benefit pension plan with no employee contributions; a 401(k) savings plan; and paid vacation and sick leave.
