We are seeking a Bioinformatics Scientist at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD

This is a 3 month-long contract position which offers:

TASKS/SERVICES . The contractor shall:

  1. Provide support in software development for genome assembly, sequencing library preparation, and creating workflows for large sequencing and genomic data sets from different sequencing platforms (primarily short-read Illumina and long-read PacBio sequencing data).

  2. Develop computational pipelines and bioinformatics tools using Snakemake, Nextflow, Python,R, Linux and bash to analyze sequencing data.

  3. Perform genomic analyses of RNA viruses, especially Influenza and SARS-CoV-2, in respect to intra-host and inter-host evolution, transmission, and genomic variants.

  4. Perform phylogenetic analyses of RNA viruses.

  5. Design in vitro validation experiments.

  6. Maintain detailed records of experiments and results and prepare the information resulting from these experiments for presentations at laboratory-wide meetings and for publication.

  7. Write reports of findings, state methods and procedures, include any modifications employed, specimens and materials involved and results of experiments.

  8. Maintain laboratory records.

  9. Interpret, evaluate, and discuss the results of each experiment with the Federal Task Leader as part of the planning process for subsequent studies.

  10. Operate and communicate effectively in a group, team-oriented working environment.

  11. Work with and support others in a collegial, open, respectful, and interactive working manner.

  12. Work collaboratively with others in the lab to generate data for publications.

  13. Provide analysis and interpretation of data and preparing summaries of laboratory findings to be used in reports and papers to be presented at scientific meetings and/or publication in scientific journals.

REQUIREMENTS . The contractor must have:

  1. PhD degree is required.

  2. Minimum of Five (5) years of experience in bioinformatics is required.

  3. Experience working in a laboratory setting.

  4. Expertise with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc).

  5. Experience in R, Python, and other programming languages.

  6. Ability to write, submit and publish papers describing research in peer-reviewed journals

  7. Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with intramural and extramural colleagues.
